Meet Flook, an extraordinary coffee latte artist and U.S. Latte Art Champion. Khalique Law collaborated with attorney Daven Gandhi to help Flook pursue an O-1 Visa based on his extraordinary ability and achievements in the highly specialized field of latte art.

Flook’s O-1 Visa case presented some unique challenges. After the petition was filed, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a Request for Evidence (RFE), questioning both the artistic skill and technical ability required to be a coffee latte artist and the prestige of Flook’s international awards.

We worked to demonstrate that Flook’s accomplishments went far beyond making an ordinary cup of coffee. His work required exceptional artistic ability, technical precision, and creativity, and his recognition in international competitions helped establish his standing within his field.

Overcoming Challenges During the O-1 Visa Process

Even after overcoming the RFE, Flook faced another challenge during his visa interview in Thailand. The consular officer questioned why latte art should be considered an extraordinary field and did not approve the visa at that time.

The timing was especially difficult because Flook needed to return to the United States for another competition. We advised him on his lawful options, and he was able to return to the U.S. and compete—ultimately winning the competition.

Flook later obtained his O-1 Visa through another U.S. consulate.

His case demonstrates why presenting strong evidence and clearly communicating an applicant’s extraordinary ability can be especially important when pursuing an O-1 Visa in a niche or highly specialized field. Achievements that are well understood within an industry may require additional context and documentation to demonstrate their significance during the immigration process.
