Marriage Petition Success Story: Green Card Approved for International Couple

Marriage petition & green card success story

A Marriage Petition for a Couple Living Across Multiple Countries

Congratulations to SK and SC on the successful approval of their marriage petition and marriage-based Green Card for SK.

SK is from South Africa and SC is from Colorado. Their story, however, spans several countries. They met in Thailand, married in South Africa, and later traveled between the United States, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Because their work and lives had taken them abroad, they faced an important decision: Should they pursue the marriage-based Green Card process from overseas or apply from within the United States?

Deciding Where to Pursue the Marriage-Based Green Card Process

For couples who marry or live abroad, determining where and how to pursue a marriage petition can involve several important considerations.

We walked SK and SC through their options, including the different processes and timelines involved and how each path could affect SK’s ability to work and travel. Our goal was to give them the information they needed to make the decision that best fit their circumstances.

Ultimately, SK and SC decided to pursue SK’s Green Card after returning to Colorado. They filed shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, which added an unexpected layer of complexity to an already significant transition.

Navigating Their Marriage Petition During the Pandemic

We handled the entire case virtually through video calls, email, and mail.

The process was not always easy. While waiting for SK’s work authorization, the couple faced uncertainty about their future while raising a toddler, adjusting to life in the United States, and trying to obtain necessary documents from South Africa during lockdown. At the same time, they were understandably concerned about family members living abroad.

Throughout the process, SK and SC remained focused on what mattered most: being able to build their family’s life together in one country.

We worked with them to prepare and submit strong supporting evidence for their marriage-based case and helped them prepare thoroughly for their Green Card interview.

Green Card Approved

Their persistence paid off. Following the interview, SK’s Green Card was issued within two weeks.

It was a pleasure to guide SK and SC through the marriage petition and Green Card process during such an uncertain period. We wish them and their family all the best as they continue building their life together in the United States.

Considering a Marriage Petition for a Spouse Living Abroad?

If you married overseas, currently live outside the United States, or are considering filing a marriage petition for your spouse, you may have questions about whether to pursue the process from abroad or from within the United States.

The right approach depends on your individual circumstances, including where you and your spouse live, your immigration status, work and travel needs, and your long-term plans.

Contact Khalique Law to discuss your circumstances and learn more about the options that may be available to you.
