Are you an individual with extraordinary abilities in your field? The O-1 visa offers an exciting opportunity for you to come and work in the U.S. in the field you specialize in, such as the sciences, athletics, arts, education, or business. It could also be applicable for those in the motion picture and/or television industry. However, you will need to demonstrate that your extraordinary ability is sustained by national or international acclaim.

To demonstrate extraordinary ability, it is imperative that your application is strong and speaks for itself that you are clearly extraordinary in their field. The evidence must be sufficient and convincing. Here are seven tips for formulating a strong application:

  1. Strong letters of recommendation – You should form relationships with clients, co-workers, mentors, and others who can attest to your abilities. They should be able to clearly state their support for your visa and why they think you stand out from others in your field. They should be willing to write detailed recommendations instead of vague or general letters of praise.
  2. Strong employer letters – The employer seeking to hire you should outline why they are deciding to hire you and what made them seek your talent over others.
  3. Build up your portfolio – You should connect with people already established in the field, put yourself out there, and interview with magazines.
  4. Start early – It is always smart to start building up your reputation and putting yourself and your talent out there as soon as possible. Achieve this through published work, presentations, press releases, authorship, competitions, etc.
  5. Seek employment by distinguished organizations and institutions – By working for a reputable and respected establishment, you can more easily demonstrate you are extraordinary because they are more selective in choosing their employees, requiring greater qualifications, achievements, and talents than a less distinguished one.
  6. Build your brand – Social media can be an important tool, especially in modern society. Focusing on your audience and your content, and building up a follower and fan base, can help prove you have something worth viewing and keeping up with.
  7. Clarify the importance of your accomplishments – While it is outstanding that you have won certain awards or have been featured in magazines, etc, you need to also show why your achievements are important and significant in your field.
